Dolls for Refugee Children   $20.00

After years of suffering at the hands of the Burmese government, the ethnic Karen people were forced to flee their country and now live in exile in refugee camps along the Thai-Burma and Indo-Burma borders. Children in the camps have little access to toys to call their own.

This Gift That Gives More™ supplies one doll each to two children living in the refugee camps. By purchasing dolls for children, you not only bring big smiles to small faces, but also help women artisans in the camps earn a living wage for themselves and their families.

Women's Education for Advancement and Empowerment (WEAVE) is a non-profit organization established in 1990. With project centers in the ethnic Karen and Karenni refugee camps along the Thai-Burma and Indo-Burma borders, WEAVE works to improve the lives of marginalized indigenous women and children by improving education, health, and self-reliance.

Report from the Field
In 2007, WEAVE coordinated the production of dolls for over 1,500 refugee children, and distributed them to children in Mae Ra Ma Luang camp (Mae Hong Son province) and Umpiem Mai camp (Tak province).

In its 2007 project report to us, WEAVE writes: "We are very grateful for the grant extended to us. The doll giving activity in the 2 refugee camps along the Thai-Burma border was very successful and it has given so much joy to the children, parents, teachers and weavers to be part of this wonderful undertaking. As life in the refugee camp became almost hopeless for possible return to normal living, the event has somehow showed to these children and their parents that there are still people (even we don't know and is very far from us) who cares and thinks of them."

WEAVE still needs our help. They continue, "We would like to continue the doll giving activity each Christmas time with the nursery school children along the Thai-Burma border. And we will increase the number of dolls for this coming December. We would also like to involve more women in the production of the dolls by extend more skills training opportunities to other refugee women."

WEAVE reports that there are over 9,000 preschool children in the 9 refugee camps along the border. Help us bring smiles to more of those children in 2008!
