High-Efficiency Stoves for Darfur Refugees From $20.00
The Berkeley Darfur Stove is only five small pieces of bent metal, but its impact is too great to measure.
Since 2003, hundreds of thousands of African Sudanese have been killed in Darfur and another 2.2 million people — mostly women and children — are crowded into camps surrounded by a barren landscape.
Venturing outside these boundaries in search of fuel to cook their meals often ends in violence. But what if these women didn't have to leave the safety of the camp as often? What if they had a stove that required up to 75% less firewood? They do: It is the Berkeley Darfur Stove, and it is changing lives.
The Berkeley Darfur ultra high-efficiency cook stove:
- Can be built in Sudan by locals, enabling them to earn extra income and become part of the solution
- Is suited to local high-temperature and high-wind outdoor cooking methods
- Emits less smoke than other stoves, minimizing smoke inhalation
- Uses up to 75% less fuel, enabling women to minimize the dangerous 7-hour treks outside the camps to gather wood
- Helps the denuded environment recover from severe overharvesting
$20.00 will subsidize a Berkeley Darfur Stove for a family living in the Darfur refugee camps.
The Berkeley Darfur Stove currently costs $30 to produce. To ensure that stove recipients will use and value their stove, and not merely re-sell the metal for scrap, refugee families are asked to contribute $10 themselves. Most families are able and very willing to contribute $10, and have a sense of pride in their purchase and their ability to make it without accepting the stove as a handout. But for families that cannot afford even $10, Darfur Stoves has a fund to underwrite that portion of the $30 stove. That fund is completely separate from this Gift That Gives More. Your $20 purchase generously provides the $20 donor portion of one Berkeley Darfur Stove.
Report from the Field
May, 2009: "It was two years ago that we started the Darfur Stoves Project –- and several years before that when the idea of the Berkeley-Darfur Stove came in to being.
"We've worked hard and the project has come a long way since then. From our first volunteer, who worked with locals in Khartoum hand cutting the stoves to our most recent partnership with Oxfam America with whom we are building a workshop in Darfur – the Darfur Stoves Project continues to grow.
"The stove has evolved too. Originally a fully hand-crafted stove, our latest design allows us to build flat kits and import them into Darfur for assembly. We still have an economic benefit for Darfuris through assembling the kits into stoves but we have increased the productivity from 100 stoves a week to 100 stoves a day. We expect to have 5,000 stoves in the field this year. That is 5,000 families who will experience the benefits of safety, nutrition, environment and hope.
"Thank you for your support of the Darfur Stoves Project and for helping us help those in need.
