In the wake of Hurricane Gustav, Tropical Storm Hanna, and now Hurricane Ike, the already-beleaguered people of Haiti are experiencing severe flooding and widespread damage caused by powerful winds and heavy rain. Over 240 deaths are attributed to the two hurricanes and the tropical storm, and many thousands of families have been displaced from their homes. Every region in the small nation is suffering from devastating amounts of water. Floodwaters have swamped hospitals, roads, and houses, driving people to seek refuge in shelters and on rooftops. With Haiti's widespread deforestation, the top soil is only capable of handling a few inches of rain, which the storms have completely surpassed.
